The illustrious caddy Steve Williams has recounted the candid counsel he provided to Adam Scott, which ultimately led to Australia’s first ever victory at the Masters.

Although Australia came close to winning the Masters on multiple occasions, most notably when Greg Norman competed in 1986, 1987, and 1996, the country had not won the tournament in 79 years by 2013.

Williams had been working with Scott for a total of 18 months at that point. Prior to that, he had been sacked by Tiger Woods in 2011 after a partnership that produced 13 major titles.

Scott had reached new heights with to his collaboration with Williams, and he came close to winning his first major championship at The Open Championship in 2012.

At Augusta National in 2013, Scott was in third place heading into the final round, just one shot behind the leaders Angel Cabrera and Brandt Snedeker. His fellow Australians Jason Day and Marc Leishman were also in the running for the title.

Day was in the lead with three holes to play and appeared to be in position to win the prestigious green jacket. However, bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes derailed his charge and prevented him from winning the tournament.

After making a birdie at the 18th hole, Scott was in position to win the tournament, but Cabrera was able to match his score and force a playoff.

The two golfers tied after the first hole of the playoff, which was a short uphill par-3. They then moved on to the 10th hole, which was a lengthy downhill par-4.

Both golfers had a decent chance at birdie despite the constant rain that was falling, but the Argentine was further away than the other player, which meant that he would putt first.

ADAM SCOTT

Cabrera made what CBS announcer Jim Nantz referred to as a “great putt,” but for some reason, it lingered just above the edge of the hole without dropping, leaving Scott with the largest putt of his life to make.

Williams stated that he knew when Scott nailed his approach shot that he was set to break Australia’s Augusta hoodoo. Williams made this statement when participating on the Chasing Majors podcast.

“It was an interesting process, and when we walk up from the second shot, it is a moment that instils confidence not only right then, but for the rest of your life,” he said. “That moment instills confidence not just right then, but for the rest of your life.”

“In my opinion, that is the most significant golf shot that Adam has ever been tasked with hitting, and he succeeds in doing so with a perfect score.

“It was a lovely swing at the golf ball. I did not stop him, so the realization of what was going to happen came to me all of a sudden.”

At that moment, Williams’ years of experience at Augusta National proved to be the deciding factor in the competition. Despite the fact that Scott had never putted from that spot before, Williams, who had caddied at the Masters for the first time for Greg Norman in 1987, was fully aware of what the ball would do.

Williams recalls thinking, “I knew he would never have had that putt before, something told me he’s never had that putt before,” as he was thinking back on the incident.

“I was in the situation where Greg Norman was putting, and I definitely remember the putt breaking more than it appeared like it would.

The Okbet Golf Masters Tournament in 2022 will be shown live on Nine from April 8 until April 11.

“When he went up there, he said to me, “Oh Steve, it’s dark, have a look,” and it was all I could think of at the time.

“I was really happy, but even if he didn’t ask me, I was going to have a look anyway, because I knew that he wouldn’t know how badly that broke,” she said. “It was so important to me.”

Williams’ experience made the difference because, just as the caddie had anticipated, Scott misjudged the amount the putt would break to the left, and Williams was able to read the green better than Scott.

“He had a read, and he thought it was a cup out (to the right), and I said, ‘That’s not even f—-ing close, it’s two and a half cups with a bit of speed,'” he added. “It’s two and a half cups with a bit of speed.”

“I am not sure if it was the appropriate term to use at the moment, but he stood there, and he seemed confident. He then executed a wonderful stroke, and the rest, as they say, is history.”

In addition, Scott was a guest on the Chasing Majors podcast, where he discussed how it is every player’s goal to have a chance to win a major championship.

“I was standing over that putt when I realized it was truly the putt I needed to win the Masters. I made a move that I believed demonstrated that I was serious about winning “It came back to him.

“It went in the left half of the hole, and it was probably going to go another four or five feet by, as the putt was rather quick.

“It was necessary to have a lot of confidence in order to make that putt the majority of the time. If I had dollied it down, it would have been possible for it to lip in, but it would also have been possible for it to shatter across the front.”

After nine years, Williams reports that the excitement of the event seems exactly the same as it did back in 2013.

“Simply thinking about that gives me chills all over. It was a great joy to witness Adam accomplishing one of his goals and seeing one of his dreams come true “he remarked.

“He wanted it so desperately, and to be on the bag and see someone fulfill a destiny, a dream, it was a very special thing,” she said. “He wanted it so badly.”
