Cameron Smith, an Australian golfer, believes that after his victory at the Players Championship, it is a reasonable goal for him to aim for the number one spot in the global rankings.
The 28-year-old golfer ended in Florida one shot ahead of Anirban Lahiri of India to clinch his fifth PGA Tour victory of his career. He now has his sights set on capturing his first major championship in the near future.
Additionally, he has the objective of dethroning the American Scottie Schefffler from his position as the best player in the world.
“This is easily the best stretch of play I’ve ever had in my entire career. I have the impression that if I keep putting in the effort, it will most certainly be within my grasp.
The next significant challenge for Smith will be at Augusta, where he will compete in the Masters tournament. Only one other Australian, Adam Scott, has ever won the Masters.
The native of Queensland has achieved two top-10 finishes in a row, including a runner-up showing in 2020, and feels that Australia’s next Masters victory is not too far away.
“There’s obviously a little of noise around the Australian media with, ‘Is this going to be the year?’ but I feel like our time’s going to come soon,” said Smith. “I feel like our time’s going to come soon.”
“This is a location at which I’ve had success in the past. Because it is so similar to my actual residence, I find that being there makes me feel really at ease.
